How to Create a Linux Virtual Machine with VMWARE

Preamble

Hello everyone, I am a programming snail. As java developers, we all need to contact Linux servers. Generally, deployment applications are deployed on Linux servers~

But the general server either needs to be purchased, or it is only in the company, so is there any free Linux that we can use for ourselves? The answer is, yes.

We can install a virtual machine on our own computer, and then we can install various systems in the virtual machine. Today, I will introduce how to create a Linux virtual machine with VMWARE.

Initial creation

First of all, the installation steps are not repeated here. Let's go straight to creating a virtual machine. Click the [Create a new virtual machine] icon button on the main interface.

0

Select [Typical Installation] and click the [Next] button directly.

0

On the installation source side, we can select [Install the operating system later] and click the [Next] button.

0

In the selection of the guest operating system interface, since we plan to install the Linux system this time, choose the Linux system. In the option bar below, there can be many different versions of the Linux system. I am going to install the Centos7 system here. So choose this version to facilitate better adaptation of VMWare.

0

Next, you need to name the virtual machine and select the installation location of the virtual machine. This can be the default, or you can customize it according to your own needs. Continue to the [Next] button.

0

Next, you need to specify the disk size. The default here is 20G. I feel that I am enough. If you need to install many applications in the virtual machine, you can increase it appropriately. After this 20G is set, it will occupy the host machine. space, so choose according to your actual situation.

There is also the need to set the virtual disk as a single file or multiple files. Each has advantages and disadvantages, depending on your own situation, generally speaking, it is not a big problem.

0

Finally, we will confirm again that there is no problem with the previous settings. As for the [Custom Hardware] option, this can be set later. Click the [Finish] button here.

Virtual machine configuration

Then, we can see that this virtual machine has been created. At this point, you can directly click to run this virtual machine and run it, but there is no system installed at present, so there should be no system startup or the like. Here directly click the [Edit virtual machine settings] option.

0

For example, the number of processors can be increased, so that the performance of the virtual machine will be improved.

0

Remove unnecessary hardware such as sound card and printer to save space.

0

On the network adapter side, it defaults to NAT mode. In fact, this mode is also possible, and generally there will be no network problems. In this mode, the virtual machine needs to be connected to the Internet and must communicate with the host first. But I choose bridge mode here, which means that the virtual machine and the host machine are equal, and they are all connected to a switch.

0

Then, we can choose the CD/DVD option, choose the way to use the ISO image file, and select the CentOS7 image file we downloaded.

0

Install CentOS

Then, we click the [Start Virtual Machine] button. Just wait for the virtual machine to start.

0

On the interface for selecting the execution mode, we can directly select the first option, which is to directly install the CentOS system.

0

After waiting for a while, we arrive at the language selection interface, where we can choose English by default, and of course we can choose other languages, such as Chinese, etc.

0

Next, in the installation overview interface, we first find the date and time settings, click to enter.

0

Here, Shanghai is generally selected, and then the date and time below also need to be set to be consistent with the current time, which is generally inconsistent here.

Then, we can pull down, there are three main places to set, namely [SOFTWARE SELECTION], which is to set some themes of the system; [INSTALLATION DESINATION] is mainly for disk partition settings; [NETWORK&HOST NAME] is mainly for Network settings, in fact, is to enter and turn on the switch. However, because I set the [Bridge] mode at the beginning, I could not get the IP address after opening it. I changed it to the [NAT] mode after the system was installed. Yes, after the change, you can get the network ip.

As for why the bridge mode can't connect to the network and can't get the ip address, I found it, you can refer to this article. http://www.kaotop.com/it/179794.html

Let's talk about the disk partition first. Here you can set the size of some default partitions of the system. Since the hard disk space we set at the beginning is 20G, the total space here is 20G. When partitioning, you can directly input m or g to represent mega and G.

After everything is set, you can see the space allocated to each partition and the remaining space.

Then, click Finish, and on the new interface, click the [Accept Changes] button.

0

Then set the [SOFTWARE SELECTION], here mainly let us choose the installation options of the system, such as installing the smallest system, installing some systems with interfaces, etc. The right side is the corresponding application software that needs to be installed, etc., Here I select [Server With GUI] on the left, which is a system with an interface.

0

Then, we will jump to the new interface, click [ROOT PASSWORD] to set the password of the root user.

0

0

Next, wait for the system to start initializing. When finished, click the [reboot] button. Start rebooting the system.

0

After the restart is complete, we need to accept the agreement and click the [LICENSE INFORMATION] option.

0

Check the box below to accept the agreement, and then click the [Done] button.

0

Then, we click the [FINISH CONFIGURATION] button in the lower right corner. At this point, the CentOS system is basically installed.

To sum up, installing a Linux system in VMWARE is not too complicated. Our ultimate goal is to learn to use Linux and understand how it can help us deploy applications more efficiently. I will continue to write related Linux-related articles later. So, start your Linux journey now.
